Everyone always tells me that I need to write Nixon’s birth story down, so what better way than to do a blog post about it? He turns four today and I still can’t believe it!
In order to understand why his birth was so fast and crazy here’s some back story! I went into preterm labor at 24 weeks (really before but that’s a whole other story.) I was admitted to the hospital for a week and they did everything they could to stop contractions.
Since my contractions thinned out my cervix and I was dilated to a 1, they sent me home on bedrest. I continued to have contractions until 35 weeks, but my doctor said by 36 weeks I will be able to start doing more, because if the baby comes he should be fine by then. Well it was our one year anniversary (yes one haha), and we decided since we couldn’t go anywhere we’d have a staycation in Salt Lake. We booked a room at the Hilton hotel, and started our adventure. The whole day I was mostly laying flat in bed since my contractions were so bad. Normally you would probably go to the hospital right then and there, but I had been contracting for so long I didn’t ever know when to go in. They started slowing down, so Austin pushed me around in a wheelchair at City Creek (Still supposed to be on bedrest), and then we went to dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory.
Everything was still fine, just having my “normal” contractions. Austin was sick of sitting in the room all day so he wanted to go swimming at the hotel. It is still funny to me, because he hates swimming and I don’t think I’ve seen him swim much since haha. Well I’m watching him do laps around the pool and I feel tension release.. yup my water broke. I still wasn’t sure, because there was water already everywhere on the floor, but then I had another contraction and it was KILLER. It hurt so bad since that barrier wasn’t there anymore! We went back up to the hotel room to back up to head back to Ogden where I’ve been in and out of the hospital this whole time, because I was thinking we still had plenty of time. I hopped in the shower and had another really painful contraction and it felt like I was literally dying. I came out and was trying to get dressed in between contractions every couple of minutes by now. An old man wheeled me up a wheelchair, but as I tried to get in the car I threw up my spaghetti factory everywhere (sorry TMI.) We decided to call an ambulance, because I was so early and once we got to the Lobby a security guard comes running out sweating saying he’s on the phone with 911, and that we could get through this because he’s had four kids himself. I was not amused and just wanted to be out of pain. I was screaming like the movies, I couldn’t even control it. Every time I had a contraction water and blood would gush everywhere and everyone was obviously staring. The poor people in the nice restaurant next to the lobby haha. They told me to lay on the tile floor incase the baby came, which I was so mad about because it hurt so bad to move. Turns out I could have pushed right there because I was at a 10, but they didn’t want to freak me out because I refused to push without an epidural. If you’re ever in that situation, just push you’ll feel better. It hurt worse too because my body was trying to push him out, and I was trying to hold him in. ANYWAY.. the ambulance finally arrives and the drive 5 miles a hour not to hit any bumps, because they were worried he’d come out. The poor paramedics kept asking me questions to get in their system, but I was in so much pain I was screaming too loud to answer. I finally got to the nearest hospital five minutes away, and felt relief knowing I’d finally have my epidural. Well jokes on me because as soon as I arrived they told me to push. I’m like umm no I need an epidural. If contractions hurt this bad imagine pushing?! Well the sweet nurses informed me and even the anesthesiologist had to tell me that it takes 10 minutes to administer and my contractions are a minute apart. Not only that, but it takes 20 minutes to kick in, and my baby will be here in two. I was mad and so scared, but I knew I was going to have to do it alone. I said a quick prayer and gave it a push. The nurse said “his head is out.” Austin goes to look, and says ” I think i’m going to be sick.” They all rush over to him, sit him down, and even get him a drink. I was so mad I was the one pushing a baby out without an epidural and he’s getting a drink haha. I pushed one more time and he was out! I was still mad I didn’t have an epidural, because the stitches hurt from tearing so much, but I had a perfect healthy baby boy and that’s all that matters! From when my water broke until he was born was only a total of 45 minutes! It would have been sooner if I didn’t start pushing until midnight so he had his own birthday! haha
He was born at 12:10am on April 9, 2017. He weighed 5lbs 9oz, 18.5 inches. He was born exactly a month early and he didn’t even need NICU time. He was absolute perfection. I can’t believe he is four. He is my whole heart. He has such big emotions. He loves so hard. I’ve never seen a little human care so much for his family! I can go on and on about the funny and kind things he says to me all day, but I’ll save that for another time! Happy Birthday Nixon boy! We are so lucky you are ours!
